About Bodegas Avancia / Valdeorras
Bodegas Avancia nestles in the lively silver-coloured slate slopes of Valdeorras, near the Sil River. Named for the extensive mining by the Romans that took place here, (Valley-of-Gold roughly translates to Valley-of-Gold in Latin) Valdeorras is home to the greatest vineyards in Spain for Godello and “Mencía.”
Jorge was the first merchant to bring Godello to the United States, and for years he was the sole merchant selling this beverage made from this unique grape. Jorge always dreamed of having his Godello vineyards, and Bodegas Avancia is the result of that dream. Bodega Avancia manufactures Godello wine ounces to perfection all over the world.
Robert Parker Jr., Jr.’s 2016 assertion revealed to me one of many exceptional wineries in Spain was Bodegas Avancia. This tiny winery was originally 23 acres of dry vineyards, for all of their selections were Jorge Ord EZ properties. In the past, Godello grapes were among the country’s finest indigenous white grape varieties. They were able to imitate the body and taste of Chardonnay. With sharp, mineral, and floral notes in its fragrance, avant-garde is certainly the world’s leading producer of this dry white wine.
Jorge also chose D.O. Valdeorras due to its unique growing conditions for Mencía, Galicia’s best red grape. The combination of slate soils, high altitudes, old vines, and warmer temperatures than the rest of Galicia provide Valdeorras with excellent terroir for Mencía.
